Can the Borough of Highland Park make a contribution to the worldwide campaign to save energy and the planet? Do Highland Park residents know what they can do to help stop global warming? Can Highland Park students help their families use less energy?
The answer to all the questions above is yes! There are so many simple ways to help make our community more sustainable. The Green Challenge is a way for us to get involved and excited about Highland Park’s Green Community Plan by identifying easy and meaningful actions that we can all take to create a better future for our community. Do your part by signing up for the Green Challenge today!
Past Green Challenges
The Green Challenge identifies simple and meaningful ways to reduce negative impacts on the environment, live more healthful lifestyles, and create a more sustainable community. The first set of three Green Challenges were issued and carried out during the spring of 2007.
The first Green Challenge was to exchange our regular incandescent light bulbs for more energy-efficient compact florescent light bulbs. While changing only one of our light bulbs may seem to have little effect on the Borough’s energy use, the collective effects of using CF bulbs will really make a difference!
The second challenge was using canvas bags rather than plastic bags for grocery and other shopping. The average American can save between 300 and 700 plastic bags in just one year by using canvas shopping bags instead! This will help us reduce our trash and save the limited resources used to make plastic shopping bags.
The final Green Challenge was to plant native tree saplings, which will not only help shade our yards and beautify our community, but can also take some of the carbon dioxide that causes global warming out of the atmosphere.
